What does Unity teach about Jesus?
Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, wrote, “Jesus is the individual who made the complete union of mind, soul, and body in Spirit. He brought forth into expression the Christ, the God-Mind within, and consciously identified Himself with the Father. God is not a person; ‘God is Spirit.’”
Unity Worldwide Ministries declares that, “we believe that Jesus expressed his divine potential and sought to show humankind how to express ours as well. We see Jesus as a master teacher of universal truths and as our Way Shower. In Unity, we use the term Christ to mean the divinity in humankind. Jesus is the great example of the Christ in expression.
Some Christian denominations emphasize the salvific nature of Jesus Christ, sacrificed and crucified for our sins, once for all, thereby creating a path through which believers may attain eternal salvation. In Unity, we look to the story of crucifixion and resurrection as a transformation – “the change in consciousness from one of suffering to one of joy and purity.” Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection are a metaphor for overcoming limitations, hurtful actions and error thinking.
In Unity we teach that each individual is an eternal expression of God. “Our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good.” In other words, we do not need a “savior” in Unity – we are born good, without the stain of “original sin” and we are all capable, through that spark of divinity within, to achieve the same consciousness that not only Jesus achieved, but Moses, Buddha, the Dalai Lama, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, among many other way showers, from every era and corner of the earth, have also achieved.
How do we do this? How do we raise our consciousness to attain our divine potential? We create our life experiences through our way of thinking. “One way to align ourselves with Spirit is through affirmations—positive statements of Truth—and meditations. Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God becomes present in our lives.”
While Unity teaching is clear, we recognize that there are divergent views regarding Jesus in our midst and respect them. We do not have a specific doctrine or creed – at our core we are a spiritual movement, based in prayer, welcoming all, with an emphasis on the practical application of spiritual principles. We look to the ancient stories of the bible and the teachings of Jesus, the great metaphysician, as timeless metaphors, still relevant to achieving our goals and fully manifesting our potential even today.
